How Does Social Media Accomplish all of That?
(This is a trick question!!) So you probably guessed… social media doesn’t DO anything. You do! Social Media is really just an umbrella term for a wide ranging set of technologies that allow you to do what we just described. What follows later in this chapter really is a high level overview of what social media platforms are out there and how you can use some of those options for your business. This is by no means a comprehensive list or a a detailed description of everything that is possible in marketing your products or services with Social Media.

When Can I Expect to See Results?
I’m sure you have all heard the stories about how this or that ‘went viral’ and how millions of people visited a small site – or how a particular business increased their sales by 300% or even 3000%. Well, I’m here to say that these stories are probably true. And what that means is very little. There really isn’t a lot of data available on the impact of social media yet. So we don’t really know if it typically helps or hinders a business. We also don’t know a whole lot about the impacts over time, but we do have some decent information about how other online marketing tools work. So to answer the question about when will it work I’ll be a little prophetic and say it will take time, dedication and luck and after a while, a year or two, you will likely see results. You may see them much faster, and sometimes even instantly, but I’m talking about larger business trends and that takes time.
